The Graduate Programs of Faculty of Animal Science UGM held a joint lecture series for Philosophy of Science course with topic “Ontology, Epistemology, and Research Philosophies”. This event was held online on August 31, 2021. Prof. Dr. Budi Guntoro from UGM Indonesia became the speaker and Dr. Winitra Leelapattana from Maejo University Thailand became the moderator.The lecturer attended by students from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippine, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Budi Guntoro said that if we want to do research, we need to follow the philosophy of science. In Philosophy of Science, there are Ontology and Epistemology branches. Ontology is a study of what exists, in general. In Ontology have to study about the reality before we go through in deep scientific knowledge. Meanwhile, Epistemology learns about how methodology, method, tools, and instrumentation of research.
The students were given chances to ask about the lecture and did discussion. Some of the questions were the implementations of research philosophies in the research. In the answer session, Budi Guntoro said that there are two kinds of scheme of research which are deductive research and inductive research. As closing statement, Budi stated that we are now in studying animal science, social science, tourism and other study. Actually, we have the same philosophy with only different way of how to find the scientific way. As Master and Doctor degree student, student needs to follow scientific method.

Master and Doctor in Animal Science Study Program UGM held a Coordination Meeting for the Pendidikan Magister menuju Doktor untuk Sarjana Unggul (PMDSU) Roadmap on Monday, August 30, 2021. PMDSU is a fast track of study from Master to Doctor Program. The event was held online and was attended by nine PMDSU scholarship awardees and the promotors. The coordination of the roadmap was carried out to equalize the perception of the implementation of PMDSU at Fapet UGM.
The speakers of this event were Ir. Nafiatul Umami, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN Eng. as the Head of the Master in Animal Science Study Program and Prof. Ir. Yuny Erwanto, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM. as the Head of Doctor in Animal Science Study Program. They explained the preparation of the Plenary Study Plan (RSP). The RSP refers to the regulations set by the Directorate General of Higher Education and the provisions of the University. Students are required to complete studies within four years. Courses taken are courses in Master and Doctoral programs that relate to students’ research interests.
Nafiatul Umami said that to continue to the Doctoral program, students must take: compulsory study program courses, compulsory Master interests, and several elective courses of interest. Yuny Erwanto said that to complete education and to obtain a Doctor degree, students must pass the monitoring and evaluation carried out every semester with the provisions that have been set in each semester. If students do not pass the monitoring and evaluation, students can continue their studies and complete studies for the master program. Promotors and students are expected to communicate and establish good relationships.
Faculty of Animal Science UGM held a socialization for The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) Scholarship program. This event was conducted online on August 30, 2021. Dr. Maria Cristeta Navera Cuaresma was the speaker of this event with Prof. Dr. Budi Guntoro as the moderator.
SEARCA is a scholarship given for master and doctor degree. To obtain this scholarship, there some steps to do. Applicants need to submit online application. After that, SEARCA screens and endorses candidates for interview. SEARCA and Ministry conducts interview of applicants and SEARCA evaluates interview results. Candidates will be recommended to donor or partner university and then the results will be received by SEARCA. Successful candidates receive award letters from SEARCA and become SEARCA scholarship awardee.
Dr. Maria said that the benefits of this scholarship consist of travel allowance, tuition and other school fees, book and supplies allowance, health and life insurance, monthly stipend, and thesis or dissertation allowance. These benefits are standard and different for master and Ph.D. Non-degree and other scholarship also offered for students. this provides limited support to highly qualified Southeast Asian Faculty members or graduate students to conduct research or take courses for credits outside the home university under the supervision of a counterpart adviser.
Study Program of Master in Animal Science UGM conducted the academic socialization and welcoming event for new students 2021/2022 Academic Year. This event was attended by 34 new students. The event was held online on August 14, 2021.
Ir. Nafiatul Umami, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN Eng. as the Head of Master in Animal Science Study Program explained the academic information to the new students. This information was related to their study interest and the total credits that might be taken by students. Master in Animal Science provides two programs based on the curriculum, by-research and by-course programs. A by-research program is a program that would be focused on research for the credits taken, while by course program is a program with courses as the main focus. Nafiatul also gave support for the students to arrange their study plan well so they can graduate in time.
Academic information socialization discussed some academic regulations that should be obeyed by students regarding their program. This year, there were many ways for student submission, like own cost (self-funded), partnership, and scholarship like Pendidikan Magister menuju Doktor untuk Sarjana Unggul (PMDSU). This event was closed with a discussion and question session about courses for by-course and by-research programs that will facilitate students’ study interests.
Rina Widyaningrum became the Best Graduate of the Master Study Program at the Period IV Graduate Program Graduation, Academic Year 2020/2021. This event was on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, through Zoom Meeting. Rina got a Great Point Average (GPA) of 4.00, with the predicate of Cumlaude. Rina was able to complete her studies in a fast time of one year and ten months. Rina completed her thesis with the title “Estimated Genetic Parameters, Outputs, and Population Dynamics of Aceh Cattle at the Superior Cattle Breeding Center and Forage Animal Feed Indrapuri” under the guidance of Ir. Dyah Maharani, S.Pt., MP., Ph.D., IPM. as the first advisor and Prof. Ir. I Gede Suparta Budisatria, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng. as the second advisor.
Rina is one of the productive students, besides completing her thesis, Rina has also completed three publications of her research results. The publication was published in the Journal of the Indonesian Tropical Animal Agriculture and The 2nd International Conference on Agriculture and Bio-industry (ICAGRI-2020) with published status and one publication that has been accepted at The 3rd International Conference of Animal Science and Technology ( ICAST 3).
In this study, Rina is one of the Civil Servants of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia who is assigned to study at the Master of Animal Science Study Program, Faculty of Animal Science, UGM. After graduating, Rina will return to her duties as Cattle Breeding Supervisor at the Superior Cattle Breeding and Forage Center in Indrapuri, Aceh.
In the event of the Postgraduate Program Graduation Period IV, the 2020/2021 Academic Year which was held online on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, the university inaugurated 581 Master Program graduates and 55 Doctoral Program graduates. Faculty of Animal Science UGM inaugurated six Master in Animal Science. The six graduates were Hamzah Nata Siswara, S.Pt., M.Sc., Irfan Nur Fatoni, SP, M.Sc., Muhammad Khoirudin, S.Pt., M.Sc., Rezki Amalyadi, S.Tr. Pt, M.Sc., Rina Widyaningrum, S.Pt., M.Sc. and Safira Amalina Addini, S.Pt., M.Sc.
In this graduation ceremony, the Best Graduates were represented by Rina Widyaningrum, S.Pt., M.Sc. with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.00 and also received the title of Cumlaude. Rina also became the best graduate in the Faculty of Animal Science.
The average study period for the Master’s program at the university is two years and three months, while the Doctoral program is four years and five months. The average GPA for the Master program is 3.60, while the Doctoral program is 3.63. The average GPA for the Master’s Degree program at the Faculty of Animal Science is 3.81, with an average study period of two years and one month. The fastest study period for the Master’s program was achieved by Hamzah Nata Siswara, S.Pt., M.Sc. by taking one year and four months to complete his study.
Faculty of Animal Science UGM held the 2nd INTERNATIONAL JOINT GRADUATE SEMINAR ON ANIMAL SCIENCE together with several international universities. This event was held online on Saturday, June 12, 2021. The speakers and participants of the seminar were academics from several countries, including Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, and Denmark.
The Secretary-General of the Southeast Asia Network of Animal Science (SEANAS) as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN Eng., delivered the opening speech for this international seminar. Ali Agus in his speech conveyed the full support of the UGM Faculty of Animal Science for the seminar as well as welcoming all seminar participants from various international universities who attended. Dr. Alexander N. Morados as Director of Research and Innovation, Cammiguin Polyechnic State College, Philippines, Dr. Heny Akit as Head of the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysia, Dr. Elpidio Agbisit, Jr. as Dean of the College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Philippines, Prof. Dr. Budi Guntoro as President of the Asian Tourism Academic Management Association (ATMA), and Dr. Weerapon Thongma as President of the Asian Agricultural Association of Colleges and Universities (AAACU) and President of Maejo University, Thailand also delivered a brief speech.
In this seminar there is a plenary session presented by Prof. Abdul Razak Alimon, Adjunct-Professor, Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia and Prof. Dr. Henning Otte Hansen from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The event was moderated by Dr. Muhsin Al Anas and continued with a discussion session between participants and resource persons. The materials and questions presented were related to animal feed and production and the livestock industry.
The core event of the 2nd International Joint Graduate Seminar on Animal Science was the presentation of papers which were divided into nine groups with the number of presenters from five to six people. Each presentation group was led by a moderator, a committee, and an advisor who is a lecturer at the UGM Faculty of Animal Science. Presenters came from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Topics covered in the presentation include livestock nutrition, livestock production, livestock product technology, livestock socio-economics, tourism, agriculture and livestock business, livestock breeding, and livestock reproduction.

Faculty of Animal Science UGM held Graduation Ceremony for Postgraduate Program Period II and III the academic year 2020/2021 on Thursday, April 22, 2021. The event held in limited offline mode was attended by faculty leaders, Heads of Doctoral and Master Study Programs, lecturers, representatives of graduates, and all graduates who joined online. A total of 33 graduates were released by faculty leaders.
The number of Magister graduates Period II was five people, from the interest in the study of Animal Nutrition and Forage was four people and one person from the interest in the study of Animal Product Technology. 23 Master degree graduates who graduated in Period III, from seven people interested in Animal Nutrition and Food Study, six people interested in Animal Production System Study, five people interested in Animal Husbandry Policy and Business study, and five people interested in Animal Product Technology study. There were five graduates from the Doctoral program with one graduate from Animal Production study interest, two graduates from Animal Nutrition and Food study interest, one graduate with the Animal Products Technology study interest, and one graduate Animal Reproduction and Breeding study interest. The Postgraduate Program of Fapet UGM until April 2021 has graduated as many as 836 people from the Master program and 142 people from the doctoral program.
Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN Eng., said that the average grade point average (GPA) of the Master degree study program from the Faculty of Animal Science was 3.85 while the average GPA of the Master degree study program at UGM was 3.67. The average GPA of the Doctoral study program from the Faculty of Animal Science was 3.83, while the average GPA of the Doctoral study program at UGM was 3.72. The average study period for the Master’s study program at the Faculty of Animal Science was two years and one month while the average study period for the Master’s program at UGM is two years and eight months. The average study period for the Doctoral program at the Faculty of Animal Science was four years and three months, while the average study period for the Doctoral program at UGM was four years 11 months.
The best graduate from the Master degree program of Fapet UGM Period II 2020/2021, was achieved by Nur Zaini, S.Pt., M.Sc. with a GPA of 3.88, and for Period III 2020/2021, was achieved by Danang Nur Cahyo, S.Pt., M.Sc. with a GPA of 3.96. The best Doctoral Program graduate from Fapet UGM Period III 2020/2021 was Dr. Wulandari, S.Pt. with a GPA of 3.96. The graduation activity was closed with encouraging words from faculty leaders to all graduates who were present offline and online.
