The Graduate Programs of Faculty of Animal Science UGM held a joint lecture series for Philosophy of Science course with topic “Ontology, Epistemology, and Research Philosophies”. This event was held online on August 31, 2021. Prof. Dr. Budi Guntoro from UGM Indonesia became the speaker and Dr. Winitra Leelapattana from Maejo University Thailand became the moderator.
The lecturer attended by students from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippine, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Budi Guntoro said that if we want to do research, we need to follow the philosophy of science. In Philosophy of Science, there are Ontology and Epistemology branches. Ontology is a study of what exists, in general. In Ontology have to study about the reality before we go through in deep scientific knowledge. Meanwhile, Epistemology learns about how methodology, method, tools, and instrumentation of research.
The students were given chances to ask about the lecture and did discussion. Some of the questions were the implementations of research philosophies in the research. In the answer session, Budi Guntoro said that there are two kinds of scheme of research which are deductive research and inductive research. As closing statement, Budi stated that we are now in studying animal science, social science, tourism and other study. Actually, we have the same philosophy with only different way of how to find the scientific way. As Master and Doctor degree student, student needs to follow scientific method.
