Product and Market Diversification: the Key to Strengthening Global Poultry Exports

The national poultry industry has a great potential to contribute in raising export numbers in Indonesia. Therefore, a strategic push is essential to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global poultry industry.

“What is necessary to push is the strategy to enhance product and market diversification, utilizing digital technologies in production and distribution stages, and gaining synergy between government, industry, and other stakeholders,” stated Andri Hnindyo Wibowo, a doctoral student in Animal Science program at Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM), when defending his dissertation titled “Strategies for Enhancing the Competitiveness of Indonesian Broiler Products in International Market” on Monday (2/2).

In his dissertation, Andi highlighted the surplus in national broiler production, which holds export potential. Indonesia is reported to have had a surplus of both broiler meat and eggs in 2024. Without market expansion, this could suppress prices at the farm level.

The research analyzed export data for Indonesian broiler products from 2014 to 2023 by employing various approaches such as Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Export Product Dynamic (EPD), Market Share Index (MSI), Gravity Model, Porter’s Diamond, and SWOT analysis. Secondary data were gathered from BPS-Statistics Indonesia, the Ministry of Trade, and UN Comtrade, also supported by primary data from industry players and stakeholders.

Furthermore, the analysis indicated that the geographic distance and the economic conditions of destination countries influence export performance. From the perspective of industry competitiveness, companies’ strategy and structure, together with supportive government policies, particularly simplification of export procedures, becomes the key factor in raising numbers of the competitiveness of Indonesian broiler chicken products.

The dissertation examination was attended by Prof. Ir. Mujtahidah Anggriani Ummul Muzayyanah, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM., as the promoter, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN Eng., Prof. Ir. Budi Guntoro, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., as the co-promoters, along with Ir. R. Ahmad Romadhoni Surya Putra,  S.Pt., M.Sc. Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng. and Ir.Mochamad Sugiarto,SPt.,MM.,PhD., IPU., ASEAN Eng.
