General Lecture “Publication of Articles in Scientific Journals”

News Thursday, 8 April 2021

Postgraduate Faculty of Animal Science UGM held a public lecture with the theme “Publication of Articles in Scientific Journals.” The meeting discussed the preparation of manuscripts, selecting journals, and submissions. The lecture will be held online on Wednesday, April 7, 2021.

Abdul Rohman, Ph.D. from the Center for Excellence in Higher Education Science and Technology, the Institute for Halal Industry and System (PUI-PT IHIS) Universitas Gadjah Mada, was a speaker at the article publication event. Abdul explained that some materials support the making of articles until they are published, “In the results and discussion sections, the pictures and tables should be referred in the text. The main findings should be presented in a table or figure. Things that also need to be considered include not repeating the mention of the results frequently but directly to the focus of the discussion, not being wordy, and writing the main findings in independent figures and tables, ” said Abdul.

The event was held with a material presentation by Abdul Rohman and then continued with activities to review journal articles made by the participants. Reference making is discussed in-depth with the Mendeley reference generation system. Abdul gave suggestions to the participants regarding journal making. A journal intended for publication in English would be best made with “Don’t start with native,” which means that articles made directly into English, not Indonesian, are converted to English.

GENERAL LECTURE “Potential of Sorghum as a Plant in the Land and the Dry Season”

News Thursday, 25 March 2021

The Postgraduate Student Association or Himpunan Mahasiswa Pascasarjana (HMP) Fapet UGM held a Public Lecture “Potential of Sorghum as a Plant in the Land and the Dry Season.” The activity was carried out on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, online. Head of the Animal Science Major of Faculty of Animal Science, University of Papua, Evi Warintan Saragih, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., and Lecturer of Animal Science Major of Faculty of Animal Science UGM, Dr. Ir. Bambang Suhartanto, DEA., IPU., were the speaker at the event.

Evi Warintan discussed specifically local grass in Papua, named Sorghum Sudanense. Sorghum Sudanense is a source of local forage in Papua. Based on research, the cultivation of Sorghum Sudanense used a spacing of 50 x 30 or 60 x 60, with pols planting material. Harvesting the grass is carried out at the age of 30-45 days. The research results on animal feed showed that the addition of supplements (rumen fluid) to sorghum grass silage could improve quality. The grass products have been made into wafer and silage,”said Evi.

The issue of ruminant feed was the opening of the material presented by Bambang Suhartanto. In this material, the problem of forage in Indonesia related to its availability was influenced by one of factors, like season factor. Indonesia is a tropical country with two extreme seasons, the rainy and dry seasons. This season affects the fluctuations in the production of forage plant biomass. The production of plant biomass will be low in the dry season. This case needs to be considered, regarding the high cost of feed and production of ruminants is also limited and expensive.

GENERAL LECTURE “PASTURE NATIVE PAPUA AND SUPERIOR FORAGE CULTIVATION”

News Wednesday, 24 March 2021

The Postgraduate Association of the Faculty of Animal Science UGM held a General Lecture with the theme “Papua Native Pasture and Superior Forage Cultivation.” The meeting was held online on Tuesday, March 23, 2021. Materials were given by two speakers. Evi Warintan Saragih, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Head of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry Department, University of Papua) delivered material related to “Papua native pasture.” Material on superior forage cultivation was delivered by Ir. Nafiatul Umami, S.Pt., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN Eng. (Head of the Postgraduate Study Program in Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada).

Evi Warintan Saragih conveyed things related to natural grazing in West Papua. The dominant type of grass in pasture is grass with an amount of more than 5%. Dominant species of grass, legumes, and weeds were also reviewed. Potential grasses and legumes can be studied further for the development of beef cattle, especially in West Papua.

“Forage plants are not only concerned with superior species but also about their management. One of the grass products is Gama Umami grass which is the result of mutation of elephant grass by being irradiated with gamma rays. This grass has a superior quality to its parents. Studies related to forage plants need further development so that it takes into account their management as well so that it can increase the productivity of our livestock, “said Nafiatul Umami.

“The experimental design is different between homogeneous and heterogeneous samples. For example, a homogeneous sample with one treatment factor can use a rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) or a completely randomized design (CRD). A heterogeneous sample consists of a single block and a double block. In one treatment factor, for a single block, uses a rancangan acak kelompok (RAK) or a completely randomized block design (RBD). The stage for a double block uses bujur sangkar latin (BSL) or a Latin Square Design (LSD),” said Ahmad Sofyan. Related materials and recommendations for journal publication were explained by the speaker.
