SO, Kebumen PO, and Pogasi Agrinak: Cattle Promising for Development

Scientific research that has been conducted by a doctoral student of the Faculty of Animal Science Universitas Gadjah Mada (Fapet UGM), Pita Sudrajad, S.Pt., M.Sc., served as a promising proof that Sumba Ongole (SO), Kebumen Peranakan Ongole (PO), and Pogasi Agrinak cattle are potential local livestock genetic resources for further development, as she emphasized during her dissertation entitled “Study of Selection Patterns and Production Systems of Peranakan Ongole Cattle Breeds and Strains in Indonesia Based on Genomic Data”, Monday (12/1) at the Faculty. Her dissertation examined the selection pattern and production system of PO cattle in Indonesia by utilizing genome data as the main scientific approach.

According to her, Kebumen PO cattle are proven to be a purebred Ongole descendant population in Indonesia, having the closest genetic distance to Indian Ongole cattle. The genomically detected selection pattern aligned with the production system on each population, confirming that the selection and adaptation occurred left measurable traces in the genome. 

“In the future, validation of identified gene candidates is highly needed through further analysis on a broader range of the population. Moreover, the MAP3K1 and KIF13A gene that has been identified as a selection pattern on various populations of cattle (SO, Pogasi Agrinak, and Ongole) is much needed to highlight,” she stated.

On the other hand, different development strategies are required for the three populations: SO cattle need to focus on increasing genetic variation, Kebumen PO cattle on optimizing production potential without losing genetic diversity, and Pogasi Agrinak cattle on monitoring the selection program to avoid reducing their genetic diversity.

From a policy perspective, it requires support to integrate genomic selection into breeding program on a national scale, regulation to protect PO cattle crazing land in Sumba as a conservation area, prevention of genetic introgression on Kebumen Po cattle, as well as replication of  structured breeding model that has been implemented on PO Kebumen cattle to other areas for local cattle development in Indonesia. Furthermore, the targeted selection pattern in Pogasi Agrinak cattle has the potential to serve as a model for beef cattle breeding in Indonesia.

Tety Hartatik, S.Pt., Ph.D., IPM., Prof. Ir. Panjono, S.Pt., M.P., Ph.D., IPM., ASEAN Eng., Prof. Dr. Ir. Endang Baliarti, S.U., Mifta Pratiwi Rachman, S.Pt., M.Biotech., Ph.D., and Prof. Dr. agr. Ir. Muhammad Cahyadi, S.Pt., M.Biotech., IPM.
